Mego presents their 8-inch line of Star Trek action figures and playsets. These fully articulated Mego action figures are the very first time any Star Trek characters were represented as toys. The Mego line of 8" Star Trek figures featured characters made popular by the original television series of the same name.
The original Star Trek television series had actually been off the air for several years and the first Star Trek movie didn't even exist yet when Mego began producing these figures. In a lot of ways, Mego merchandising can be credited with reviving the Star Trek franchise.
The main difference you'll notice with the male crew of the Enterprise versus a typical Mego figure, is that their boots are sculpted directly as the lower half of the figure's legs instead of being removable boots like we've seen with nearly all other Mego figures. This format is consistent for Kirk, Bones, Spock, and Scotty. While the look of the boot itself is authentic it takes away a very important part of articulation in the ankles. This makes theses figures much less poseable than other Mego figures (although – in all fairness, the removable Mego boots restrict articulation in much the same way).
Starting around 2008, Diamond Select Toys created some fantastic repros of these Star Trek action figures. In addition to recreating nearly all of the original characters (Talos and the Neptunian are the only ones that Diamond has yet to recreate), they also created some brand new ones for their line of 8-inch Star Trek action figures like Captain Pike, Kahn, and the Salt Vampire.
