This 8" Captain Kirk action figure from the Star Trek television series was produced by Mego as part of their 8-inch line of Star Trek action figures.
A part of what made the Mego Star Trek line of action figures so successful was the incredible likenesses Mego achieved between these figures and the actors on the show. Remember, there was no laser scanning back in the 1970s, so each of these head sculpts was done by a human working for a "mere" toy company selling $4 dolls. All things considered, these really were exceptional figures.
Mego Star Trek Captain Kirk Outfit and Sculpt
Mego distributed Captain Kirk on both Type 1 and Type 2 bodies. Both styles of Captain Kirk figures have twelve points of articulation (neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, groin, and knees).
Kirk's black boots are not removable. Instead, they are molded from the lower half of his legs. This distinct feature means that the Mego Captain Kirk has no ankle articulation. This is the same process used with all Mego Star Trek male crew members.
The Mego Captain Kirk action figure comes clad in a yellow tunic detailed with a black felt neckband, three gold foil rank stripes on either sleeve just above the wrists, and a silver foil insignia as seen on each of the Star Trek crew action figures.
This 8-inch Captain Kirk figure wears black cuffed 3/4 length trousers which end at about the calves. The pants are made from a similar material to the one used for the tunic.
Captain Kirk's uniform is completed with a black plastic utility belt containing a removable light blue phaser & communicator.
Loose Captain Kirk action figures are typically missing the small blue phaser and/or communicator. Also, the delicate foil insignia typically falls off of the uniform leaving only the underlying gray backing material in place.
Mego 8-Inch Capt. Kirk Variations
There were three distinct variations of the Mego Captain Kirk head. The first, and rarest, is the Type 1 head which was molded from a light flesh color and had pink paint details on the lips. The second Mego Capt. Kirk head variation is identical to the first but lacks any lip detail. The third Captain Kirk head variation is the most common and can be identified as being a Type 2 head molded from a darker flesh tone and having no lip detail.
