Conan the Barbarian was first released by Mego in 1975. At the time he was being licensed to Marvel Comics who was successfully producing Conan comic books and black & white magazines.
Conan was an interesting choice for Mego which really required a different approach than what we'd seen on most of the other World's Greatest Super-Heroes action figures.
Mego is one of two male figures from the World's Greatest Super-Heroes line of action figures that has rooted hair -- the other being The Mighty Thor... another Marvel Comics character.
The head sculpt is excellent because it really captures the essence of the character -- anger and tough. The rooted hair tends to get a little crazy looking over time, but -- in the case of Conan the Barbarian -- it actually works really well.

The real reason Conan was sort of a strange choice for Mego is that he's more of an anti-hero than a super-hero. Regardless, he doesn't have much of an outfit to speak of. When you're dealing with Mego 8" action figures with removable fabric outfits, that fact presents somewhat of a challenge when trying to achieve a suberb figure. Mego met the challenge and succeeded.
Conan is simply clad in a pair of brown barbarian shorts made out of a furlike material. He wears a pair of brown pirate-like boots on his feet (these would actually have been perfect for Captain America if they were made out of red instead of brown). The real art of the Conan action figure is what Conan did after this...
Mego's Conan action figure tops the charts with accesories -- 8 total individual pieces if you include the boots.
Here's the score: 2 boots; 2 plastic yellow wristbands; one plastic yellow belt; a second plastic brown belt with sheath; 1 silver barbarian sword; and one silver battle axe (sorry -- no turtle doves).
Because of all these accesories, you'll be hard-pressed to find a loose Conan action figure from Mego with all of it's original parts.
Like Mister Fantastic, The Invisible Girl, The Human Torch, The Thing, and Thor, Conan was never released on a Type 1 Mego body.
