8-Inch Scale THING Action Figure from Mego

Mego and Marvel Comics present this 8-inch scale Thing action figure.

The Thing action figure from Mego was released as part of their World's Greatest Super-Heroes line of toys.

Ben Grim is the Fantastic Four's ever-lovin' blue-eyed THINGMego released the Fantastic Four action figures as part of their 8" World's Greatest Super-Heroes line in 1976. Along with Mister Fantastic, The Invisible Girl, and the Human Torch, The Thing rounded out Marvel's foursome.

The Fantastic Four action figures from Mego were part of the last set of new figures that Mego would create as part of the WGSH.

8-Inch Mego The Thing Action Figure

The Mego Thing and Incredible Hulk action figures share several aspects which are unique to these two figures. Since both of these characters are supposed to be very large and bulky, Mego wanted to create a new body to convey that feel. In doing so, they sacrificed some other features -- one of them being articulation.

Unlike most of the other Mego action figures, Thing, Hulk, and even the Lizard are not jointed at the wrists, ankles, and waists. Unlike the Lizard, Thing and Hulk have one large mid-section and no articulation at the waist.

This reduced articulation makes the Thing and Hulk figures much less poseable than other Mego action figures.

Aside from being sculpted from orange plastic where the Hulk is obviously green, the entire body is the same except for the forearms/hand segments. The Thing's forearms and hands have a rock texture similar to the one used on the head sculpt.

Mego Thing figures that have been exposed to things like long periods of sunlight can show signs of fading. The fading will be more evident when the outfit is removed revealing the color variation between the hands and the forearm.

Another big drawback to the Mego Thing action figure is his scale compared to other Mego figures like the rest of his teammates. The Thing and Hulk are actually shorter than other Mego figures which is clearly the opposite of what these characters should be. Possibly this had to do with the fact that Mego needed to ensure that all figures could continue to fit within a pre-defined space of packaging. The bulky body would have to be reduced overall to allow it to fit within the same confines of the other Mego figures.
