Mego first released their 8" Captain America action figure in 1973 along with his Marvel Comics partner Spider-Man as part of the extremely successful World's Greatest Super-Heroes line.
These two Marvel Comics characters were logical choices for Mego to start with when tackling the Marvel Universe since they're sort of Marvel's equivalents of DC's Superman and Batman with which Mego was already having great success.
Head Sculpt of the 8-Inch Mego Captain America
Compared to some of the other Mego head sculpts, Captain America seems a little uninspired. He looks very non-heroic and bored. His eyes are very oversized and his face looks soft -- lacking a strong jaw.
The blue of Captain America's mask is generally deeper and slightly darker than the blue used in the fabric of his outfit.
Captain America suffers from a somewhat unique issue in that the skin tone of his face varies from doll to doll.
The reason the flesh variation is somewhat unique to the Mego Captain America action figure is that the head itself is actually sculpted out of all blue -- the blue you see of his mask. The face and front of the mask is then painted on top of the blue head. Hence the blue noses in our samples where the paint has chipped off.
Most other Mego heads were sculpted from the actual skin tone of the character with everything else being painted on top. This made for a more consistent skin color. So for Mego, in Captain America's case, the variation of the skin tone was specifically a variation in paint.
It's easy enough to find Mego Captain America head sculpts with several different flesh variations. The paint used for Cap's face will vary from a rich pink to a more yellowish tone to a traditional flesh tone.
Outfit for the 8-Inch Scale Mego Captain America
Captain America is clad in his iconic red, white, and blue uniform although Mego did take a few liberties.
Clearly missing from this action figure are Cap's red gloves. Captain America would have been the ideal candidate to receive a pair of nice red Mego oven mitts. Most likely, Mego opted to lose the gloves so that this action figure would have his hands free to be able to hold his shield (see notes below).
Captain America's unitard is stitched from several different pieces with most of it being a light blue stretchy material.
The upper body and arms of this action figure are covered in the light blue material. In addition to the missing gloves, the white of caps mid-arm section is also missing.
The blue material of the upper body cuts off at the rib cage where it is stitched to a red and white striped material which covers the abdominal section. The red stripes are printed onto the white material to create the red and white stripes of Captain America's outfit.
The red and white material is then stitched to the torso and leg section. Across the waist you will generally find a vinyl belt stitched in across the top and bottom. Later versions of the Mego Captain America action figure have an unstitched version of the belt which only appears on type 2 bodies.
The earliest editions of Mego's Captain America figure have a white fabric star on the chest. Later versions have a white paper sticker instead.
Like with all Mego emblem stickers, they tend to fall off over time. Even if you find a mint figure still in the package, the glue of the emblem simply dries up over time and you'll probably see the emblem floating around lose within the box.
Captain America's red boots are identical to the ones used for the Mego Superman figure. It would have been nice to see a pair of more accurate comic book boots -- something a little pirate-esque. A pair of Mego Conan boots in red plastic would have been perfect for Captain America.
Accessories of the Mego Captain America Action Figure
The Mego Captain America comes with a shield molded out of black plastic with a handle on the rear side. The front of Cap's shield is crudely covered with a paper sticker that has a few cuts in it to help it conform to the rounded surface.
Printed on the shield's sticker is Captain America's iconic red and white striped look with it's white star on a blue circle as the bulls-eye.
