8-Inch Retro Action Captain Cold Figure from Mattel
Mattel and DC Comics present one of The Flash's main nemeses, Captain Cold. With Flash finally receiving the Mego treatment he was going to need someone to go up against. Mattel found that someone in their Captain Cold.
The Retro-Action Captain Cold is the first time this character appears in a Mego format. With Flash also making his first appearance in this format, it's understandable why none of the Flashes' villains preceded him. That said, we give you the first 8" Megolike Captain Cold figure courtesy of Mattel's Retro-Action DC Super-Heroes line.
There are a few problems with Captain Cold's head sculpt. Admittedly, a guy wearing a large, fur-rimmed hood and an oversized visor is going to be a difficult order to fill.
The best head sculpts pick a sort of neutral expression while still giving you a great sense of the character. Captain Cold seems to have caught a cold himself as he appears to be sniffling. The crooked sneer definitely gives him a non-heroic look, which might be appropriate for a villain. However, the sneer also makes you wonder if this is his really most common facial expression.
Additionally, the overall head size seems to be too small in proportion to the other figures from the Mattel Retro-Action series. The width of the fur of his hood seems just slightly larger than an average Retro-Action head, so where the fur meets Captain Cold's face and where his eyewear envelope his cheeks give the feel of a very small head -- too small, in fact for an adult male of this size.
Lastly, the fur of his hood looks rather funny when you view Captain Cold straight on. Instead of looking like fur trim on a hood, it looks more like a strange, white lion's mane or an all white hairdo and beard. Mattel might have done better to actually have the hood as part of the uniform which also would have made Captain Cold seem more like a true Mego figure.
The most flattering angle of Captain Cold's head sculpt is probably when viewed profile since you can really get the feel for the character and the fact that he's wearing a hooded overcoat.
Mattel's Captain Cold figure probably would have benefited greatly from have the furred-rimmed hood as part of the removable outfit instead of making it part of the head sculpt.
Captain Cold comes with his trademark yellow holster. The pouch opens and inside you'll find his weapon of choice -- a freeze gun to use on The Flash.
