8-Inch Retro Action Superman Figure from Mattel
Up, up and AWAY!! Mattel presents DC Comics iconic Superman in a fully articulated 8" figure format.
While this is not a true Mego-repro in the sense that no one would confuse it with the original Mego Superman (see our comparison photo below), it is a very nice addition to any Mego collection.
MATTEL RETRO ACTION SUPERMAN UNIFORM
Superman appears here in his classic red, blue, and yellow uniform. The one-piece bodysuit clasps in the back using three snaps which are situated between the belt and the neckline. The red shorts are stitched-in and the yellow belt is attached near the back of the uniform.
The "S" emblem is printed on the chest as a permanent decal. This is a nice improvement over the Mego Superman whose sticker would commonly fall off the figure. However, the Mattel decal has been seen with lots of cracks occurring in loose versions of the figure.
The red cape is a nice improvement over the Mego version even though the material is very similar to Mego's. The main improvement to the cape is that the exposed edge of the material is folded and stitched which helps avoid fraying (common on Mego capes). The neck of the cape contains a hidden elastic band.
One obvious change to the cape over the Mego Superman version is the addition of the "S" emblem which is done as a yellow and black decal.
Superman's removable red boots are also nicely improved over Mego's version from the 1970s. The material used by Mattel is thicker and more durable than Mego's as well as having a nicer overall tapered shape.
MATTEL RETRO ACTION SUPERMAN HEAD SCULPT
The head sculpt of this Mattel Superman figure is very reminiscent of the iconic Superman character seen for over a decade on the Superfriends cartoon series.
From the square jaw with cleft chin to the short slicked hair with iconic curl, this Superman figure might as well be called "Superfriends Superman". In that regard, this Superman figure is a lot of fun.
