With the recent relaunch and success of Captain Action figures, Round 2 (manufacturers of Captain Action figures) have announced their next releases in the series. Marvel Comics' own Wolverine and Iron Man are about to get the Captain Action treatment.
While the samples we were shown were still in a prototype stage, the packaging and style is very promising.
The Captain Action Wolverine figure will include a one-piece bodysuit with some printed detail. They've chosen his classic yellow and blue tiger stripe look with no sleeves and removable blue gloves. The prototype is showing two sets of gloves -- one with claws and another with claws sheathed.
Based on the prototype, the Wolverine Captain Action figure may include two masks -- one of Captain Action as Wolverine and a second of him unmasked as Logan.
The prototype Captain Action Wolverine also included a Weapon X helmet. Round 2 would really be going that extra mile if they do this since the Wolverine Captain Action figure would then equate to getting three figures for the price of one -- Logan, Wolverine, and Weapon X!
Where all of the previous releases from the recent Captain Action figures have included cloth and vinyl outfits exclusively, Iron Man is going to be done correctly with a hybrid cloth and hard plastic uniform. The hard plastic will be used for some of the red armor parts. Round 2 representatives confirmed this treatment during our discussion with them.
The Captain Action Iron Man figure is going to portray Iron Man's most notable red and yellow style from the 70s and early 80s. The boots, gloves, and trunks will all have that iconic ribbed style. The Iron Man prototype indicates that the figure will contain two sets of gloves -- one with fists and one with open hands.
This hybrid fabric/plastic sort of outfit is very reminiscent of the rare Toybiz Famous Covers Iron Man -- still one of the coolest Iron Man figures to date.
There's no indication within the prototype as to whether or not the Captain Action Iron Man will also include a Tony Stark mask, but here's hoping.
With the build-a-figure concept being so popular these days, it's safe to assume that Round 2 will be going that route once again with its next set of Marvel characters. The great thing about including build-a-figure in this next release of Captain Action figures is that it means we can expect still more Marvel figures beyond Wolverine and Iron Man since those will be necessary to complete the newest build-a-figure.
Let's just hope that Captain Action doesn't go in the same direction as the original Toy Biz Marvel Legends who invented the build-a-figure concept. That line of action figures lost momentum when they began using the build-a-figure series to create too many action figures in each series -- figures that fans really didn't have any interest in buying.
No release date has been announced yet for Captain Action as Wolverine and Iron Man.
