Update: As of May 2014, it appears that both Marvel and DC lines of Captain Action are cancelled.
Big news!!! Action Figure King caught up with Round 2 Corp, the manufacturers of Captain Action. We've uncovered some news that will have DC fans screaming "YES!!!! I KNEW THE DAY WOULD COME!!!! I'VE WAITED A LIFETIME FOR THIS MOMENT!!"
Round 2 has the secured the rights to produce action figures of these fantastic DC properties. As a result, Captain Action is soon to be donning the garb of iconic DC superheroes Superman and Batman.
It's been over four decades since Captain Action released the original Captain Action as Superman and Batman outfits. Technically these aren't "action figures" since you're just purchasing the outfits, but once you put them onto an actual Captain Action... voilá!!
In the Marvel style of the recently relaunched Captain Action figures, Round 2 is planning the same treatment for a brand new DC line of heroes of 1/6th scale. These sets will include removable fabric outfits and awesome retro artwork for the packaging.
The Superman and Batman prototypes utilize fantastic artwork of premiere 1970s Batman artist Neal Adams.
The 1/6 scale Captain Action Batman uniform includes a fully detailed, one-piece bodysuit in Batman's classic gray, blue, and yellow style. The prototype included two different style removable utility belts as well as a few batarangs, removable boots and gloves.
The upcoming Captain Action as Superman figure was equally awesome and also included a 1/6 scale classically colored red, blue, and yellow body suit with removable boots & belt.
Based on the prototype, it appears that Round 2 intends to include two different head masks with this figure -- one of Superman and a second of Captain Action as Clark Kent. The Clark Kent head sculpt wore glasses and had a slightly different hairdo. Captain Action as Superman also included some unidentifiable accessories.
Recent Captain Action Marvel figures included build-a-figure pieces for the Avenger's Hawkeye. These pieces were included with hugely successful Captain Action Marvel characters like Captain America, Spider-Man, Loki and Thor. There's no indication just yet whether or not Round 2 will be including build-a-figure pieces with the DC line, but one can only hope.
No release date has been announced yet for these brand new DC Captain Action figures. Stay tuned for more info.
