KISS Sixth-Scale Action Figures from MEGO Corporation
Mego 12-inch KISS action figures featured all four members of the legendary rock band. Each sixth-scale figure has 14-points of articulation along with highly detailed removable fabric uniforms. Removable boots were created to emulate the look of the platform shoes worn by KISS. There are versions of the boots with painted detail and others without the painted detail.
The 12-inch KISS figures from Mego are dressed in black and silver outfits which represent the ones the band was wearing circa 1977-1979 during their Love Gun era/album.
A single four-color box was used for each of the four KISS 12-inch action figures with no unique identifying marks. Stickers were adhered to the face of each box with a unique id number for each member. While it would have been really cool if Mego had actually included instruments as accessories, they only included cut-outs.
Mego originally tried to utilize one head sculpt for all four KISS members feeling that the face paint itself would clearly differentiate each character. This obviously would have been the more economical way for Mego to roll. However, the band members wouldn't approve the proposal and Mego had to go back to the drawing board.
While it might have made sense for Mego to sculpt the heads out of white material (the primary color of the band's faces) instead of a flesh tone, they were -- in fact -- sculpted as a flesh tone with the white face paint added much the same way it was applied to the actual band members' faces. This detail really helped bring realism to the head sculpts and convey that same look of face paint over skin which we saw on the actual band members.
Mego creating KISS action figures was a no-brainer. The band based their entire look on comic book super-heroes and Mego was experiencing huge success with their line of World's Greatest Super-Heroes action figures featuring Marvel and DC characters.
While clearly not the greatest musicians in the world, KISS was an incredibly hot commodity worldwide in the 1970s. Even kids who didn't necessarily listen to their music knew who they were and thought they were pretty cool.
