Growing up rough in New York City, the son of a sickly single mother, William Baker turned early to a life of crime – supplementing his mother's meager income with petty theft and courier gigs for the local gangs. He adopted the alias Flint Marko to protect himself and his mother from the consequences of the criminal path he chose, but as his notoriety grew, the FBI began to actively pursue him until the fateful chase that drove him into hiding at a nuclear test site on a Georgia beach. He was bombarded with radiation, and felt his consciousness slipping away as his body discorporated into the sand.

What Baker thought was the end turned out merely to be a new beginning for the criminal, however. He re-formed his body out of the living sand of which he was now made, discovering the ability to shape himself into anything he could imagine, from razor-sharp axe-blades to a flensing whirlwind of sand a hundred feet high. Since his return to New York, he has become one of Spider-Man's most dangerous enemies, a raging, invulnerable thug who strikes without warning and disappears without a trace.
