Initially Tony Stark was wounded in a Vietnamese jungle and captured by a Communist tyrant. Stark was ordered to build a powerful weapon for his captor but instead took the opportunity to covertly build a rough draft suit of armor that would both sustain Stark’s injury and provide him with the power to escape. Later, Stark improved upon the original design and continued to do so in the process of his career as a superhero.
