Back Story of the Famous Cover Series Red Skull Figure

The Red Skull was a meek, young bellboy named Johann Schmidt before Hitler drafted him during World War II to be his secret agent. After being trained to be a master of disguise, a brilliant strategist and a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, the lethal assassin carried out the Fuhrer's most important missions. He became known as the Red Skull because he always wore a frightening mask that resembled the horrible visage of a red skull.

The Red Skull battled Captain America repeatedly throughout the war. An explosion separated the two warriors after the Sentinel of Liberty and the Skull's incredible battle in Berlin in 1945. The Star Spangled Avenger believed the skull had been killed in the blast. In reality, the evil genius was exposed to an experimental nerve gas that kept him in a state of suspended animation. The criminal mastermind emerged decades later to learn to that he's nemesis still lived and resumed his ongoing battle with him.

To this day, Captain America remains the one hurdle on road to world domination that the Red Skull has yet to leap. The Red Skull is presented here wearing the battle uniform he wore in Captain America #115. In a story entitled "Now Begins the Nightmare", the megalomaniac gained possession of the Cosmic Cube, a small, man-made cube capable of altering reality. He used its power to trade bodies with Captain America before the shield slinger stopped his sister plans once again.
